This research project, challenges conventional paradigms within heritage conservation, which predominantly emphasize past and present dimensions. The project encompasses a comprehensive review of the existing literature, delving into four pre-existing themes—diversity, profusion, uncertainty, and transformation—in relation to future aspects of heritage conservation.
Central to this research is the identification and exploration of the concept of "transmission” and its role in heritage conservation. This concept serves as a unifying theme that binds the four pre-existing themes together, offering a holistic perspective on future-oriented heritage conservation strategies. Through meticulous analysis of 139 influential international heritage conservation documents, this study reveals the pivotal role that "transmission" plays in shaping future-oriented approaches within the field.
The research employed a multidisciplinary approach in the last phase, drawing insights from cultural settings, to delve deeper into the multifaceted dimensions of "transmission." This included a semi systematic review method providing a comprehensive understanding of the role of "transmission" in cultural processes. It explored diverse modes of transmission, identified influencing factors, elucidated specific mechanisms involved, and classified types of transmission, and unveiled how biases impact transmission within cultural contexts.
